April was a reading month for me for sure. I binged a couple of good audiobooks which are my go-to lately. If you haven’t tried audiobooks yet you just might love it! I find that I am indulging in even more books now that I can do things while listening. Helps me get a lot of tasks done while also listening to a good book. Here is what I’ve read lately.
Books I’ve Read Lately:
The Vanishing Half was such a good book. It’s about twin sisters that grew up in a light-skinned African American community. The lighter the skin the better you are in that community’s eyes. Although these sisters were identical, their personalities and views were completely different. They leave town to pursue their lives and end up losing touch with each other for years. Only to realize that they were both living two completely different lives. I loved how it went back into time and spoke about the issues that we still deal with today.
Untamed is more like a self-help book than a memoir in my opinion. Although she did give some great tips on how to see things differently in life, it kind of threw me off at times too with things she spoke about. All in all, though it did inspire me to think a little differently which is a good thing.
The Wife Between Us This book at first throws you off with thinking this girl is obsessed with her ex! She was keeping tabs on the new girlfriend 😂 talk about weird. Once you go into the story more, you uncover such deep secrets that make you completely understand why she does this and why. It was a quick enjoyable read.
Where The Crawdads Sing Loved this story so much, the characters drew me in. Kya is such a free-spirited girl that grew up with a very hard life. She was poor, abandoned, and dealt with people looking down on her family. Little did they know what a sweetheart she was and there was more to her story. A dead body comes up on the beach and of course, they suspect Kya the Marsh Girl as they called her. This book gives so many twists and turns. It is a beautifully written story.
Mexican Gothic I really wanted to like this book, I’m not sure why I couldn’t get into it. At first, it did catch my attention. When Noemi receives a letter from her cousin about saving her from where she is living she decides to go see if she’s ok. Except weird things begin to happen. I don’t know if it was the whole storyline or the not so “scary” parts but it did nothing to me. 😂 I really expected more.
What I’ve read lately has been a mixture of memoir, historical fiction and “spooky” and a whole lot of self-help. I am currently reading Big Magic and look forward to it inspiring me some more. I’m always open to new interesting books to read. I would love to know what books have you been into lately and that are sparking you joy. I’m looking for some feel-good books.
